| We created Chestnut to fill a need. Businesses that had operated in Carolinas for many year were collapsing or moving operations overseas in order to survive. Workers who had known only one job their entire lives found themselves with few skills and no safety nets. Their towns began boarding dowtown windows and started desperately seeking ways to attract new business.
The Carolinas have been more economically fortunate than the rest of the country. We have a strong worth ethic, great universities, the nation's second largest financial center, an incredible medical system, wonderful weather, and lovely mountains, countryside, and beaches. But things are changing, and rapidly. We have overcrowded public schools, decreased urban tree canopy, diminished aquifers, continued poor air quality, and urban sprawl. We must practice smart growth and sustainable development to create opportunities rather than problems.
Free-market capitalism has provided us with great wealth in the past, but it has never been been practiced in a sustainable manner. We need to adopt trade practices that protect people and natural resources. The new green economy can do just that. The new economy will require innovation, flexibility, and a clear understanding of sustainable change. Responsible business stewards are abandoning traditional economic models and adopting this new one because they know it makes sense in the long run.
